TDC 55, Typography 30

We were very honored to be asked by the TDC to design the Call for Entries and Annual for the 55th Type Directors Club competition. Inspired by old science books, as well as the broad spectrum of work featured in the show and the simple beauty of type, we created charts and illustrations made entirely of type with a rainbow flair. Who doesn’t need a few more rainbows in their day? One important consideration we had to keep in mind was that the materials were sent all over the world and the imagery needed to resonate in any language but still focus on type.

The Call for Entries poster (above) with its animal type specimens, led to the publication of our children’s book, Alphabeasties. The cover of the Typography 30 features rainbow foil (highlighting “tdc”) and a diecut window. The gatefold endpaper shows the countries where all of the entries came from, on a map made of type. Rainbows and type illustrations run throughout the dividers and introduction pages.

We created type portraits for each of the competition judges, using a typeface of their choice and the first initial of their name. Pictured above are: 1. Chris Dixon 2. Alex Trochut 3.
