ALPHASAURS and other PREHISTORIC TYPES

Author: Werner Design Werks

Scary and scaly, lumbering and lumpy, fast and ferocious, big, broad and bumpy. From up north to down south, from west to east, the Earth was once home to magnificent beasts. Now most of you reading this probably know that dinosaurs lived a long time ago. Not hundreds or thousands of years in the past. It’s been hundreds of millions since they were here last. Did you know that Giganotosaurus weighed as much as 40 gorillas, but inside its giant noggin was a brain smaller than a grapefruit or that Nothronychus had 12-inch-long nails, nasty for nose-picking! Of course, this book had some additional typographic muscle from our intern and amazing designer, Carly Wright, and some prehistoric wordsmithing from Joe Weismann. Thankfully, all our facts were checked and double-checked by our friend, amateur paleantologist, Michael Berglund. We dig him.

We stumbled into the role of kids’ book creator-author-designer-illustrator, which is a long story. What began as a single children’s book about typography, Alphabeasties and other Amazing Types, has expanded into three books, two sets of flashcards, an activity book, an app and limited edition pillows, with hopes of more to come. Demonstrating to kids (and grown-ups!) that typography is fun, that type has a personality and can express more than simply the words being spelled.
